India's smart city push has quietly created a furniture problem that most people never think about. Every plaza, transit hub, waterfront promenade, and public park under these projects needs seating, planters, bollards, and streetscape elements - and it needs them in numbers large enough, and durable enough, to survive years of continuous public use with municipal-level maintenance budgets. A few considerations matter more in public infrastructure work than in private developments:

  • Anchoring and anti-theft fixing - public furniture should be specified with concealed or tamper-resistant fixing details, since freestanding units in open plazas are more exposed than furniture on a controlled private site.
  • Edge and corner detailing - rounded, reinforced edges hold up better to constant contact and reduce injury risk in high-traffic public areas.
  • Modular design - furniture that can be manufactured in repeatable modules simplifies replacement if an individual unit is damaged, without needing to source a one-off custom piece years later.
  • Finish durability testing - for coastal or high-humidity city zones, finishes should be verified for long-term colour and surface stability under local environmental conditions, not just generic weathering standards.
